I’ve tried to give as much detail as possible, as this is a very important purchase for you to consider in terms of comfort and safety for your baby.
Furthermore, if your bedroom is fairly small like ours, we needed something which was fairly compact, so this blog post will be ideal if you want something which can fit in a small space.
Co-sleeping is a popular method used in many countries throughout the world.
And while it can be a wonderful bonding time for momma and baby, there are some safety concerns of sleeping with your precious newborn which can put off some parents.
After some thought, Graham or I decided we weren’t comfortable co-sleeping with our daughter, Mia,
The thought of rolling over in the night onto a small baby was a bit scary for us!
Furthermore one of my friends really had some real trouble with her 3 year old twins and getting them to sleep in their own bed, after co-sleeping for most of the first year.
I know other’s will have different opinions on this topic, but overall I think you should do what you feel is right for you and your baby.
Graham and I started looking at alternatives to co-sleeping long before we brought Mia home. We used a moses basket for the first 3 months, but once she started to outgrow it, what were our options?
For us, it was too early to put her in a cot in her own room, so we needed an alternative…
..and our bedroom isn’t the biggest so we needed something which would fit in a small space.
Luckily we found some great products on the market that allowed us to have our cake and eat it, or in this case have our bonding moment while also keeping Mia safe.
We chose the 3-in-1 Snuzpod as our solution. It’s not too big, but it’s well built, safe and sturdy.
This great product allowed us many precious moments together as a family in those first few months of Mia’s life.
Having your baby so close to you while sleeping isn’t just a great bonding moment, logistically it really makes sense.
If you are nursing then being able to gently bring your baby close to you without having to get up is so nice. If you had a C-section, not having to lift your baby out of a crib every 90 minutes can be a life-saver.
Check out my detailed review of the Snuzpod below…
My Snuzpod Review
The 3-in-1 features of the Snuzpod include: bedside sleeper, a standalone sleeper, and a bassinet – similar to a Moses basket.
These features allow you to have your little one sleeping next to you whether you are also napping, or in another room.
Graham found it fairly easy to assemble and put it all together in about 30 minutes, which I thought was reasonable quick.
The stand has a great rocking base so you can gently rock your baby to sleep without having to rock them to sleep in your arms and then trying to transfer them to their bed..
..which sometimes makes me feel like I know what it feels like to defuse a bomb .
One wrong move and it is all over 🙂
When your baby starts rooting and fussing that she is hungry, you can easily unzip the mesh siding of the Snuzpod and slide baby over for her feeding. If you are using bottles, you will still have to get up, but that 3-in-1 is so easy to transport without hauling the entire base into another room.
Really it is the best of both worlds, combining the bassinet with your cradle and rocker. The new 3-in-1 has the perfect base for gently rocking your newborn to sleep.
The Snuzpod is perfect for every expectant family, and is a great alternative for co-sleeping with your baby. It is meant to be used up to about 6 months, or until your baby reaches 9kg. Once your little one is able to pull herself up then she will need to be in a bigger crib, but until then enjoy your time with your new bundle of joy.
One of my favorite features of the Snuzpod is that you can adjust the height to fit exactly with your bed height, so you can see right into the Snuzpod and see her sleeping. The sides of the Snuzpod are of a really great breathable mesh fabric that allows air to flow naturally around your newborn while also letting you see right in to see her snoozing soundly.
The fabric on it can be taken off and washed, but it says it needs to be washed by hand, which isn’t the best when you have a newborn, but it turned out to be fine. I was glad to know we could wash it and not just have to wipe it down which some of the other products we looked at was the case.
By the way, although this has nothing to do with this product, and more my negligence, we did notice a bit of mould on the underside of mattress which also made it’s way onto the wooden base of the Snuzpod. This was a lesson for me to clean a lot more regularly, as this was probably caused by some spilt milk which I’d obviously missed and not cleaned straight away.
As you know the first few months are pretty brutal in terms of tiredness and fatigue, but make sure you keep everything clean on a regular basis!
If you are looking for more storage space, the space under the Snuzpod is great for storing extra sheets, blankets and other supplies. But not ideal for items you will want to access on a regular basis.
I would suggest getting the add-on Storage pocket for holding extra diapers and such for those late night changes without having to get up too much. This simple convenience really made a difference for us and I would highly suggest it for you as well.
Advantages of the Snuzpod
+ Easy to assemble
+ Well built and a sturdy looking product
+ Easy access for feeding and taking your baby in and out
+ Comes with mattress
+ Extra storage underneath for sheets and other baby essentials
+ Suitable from birth – 6 months. You can use it right away.
Disadvantages of the Snuzpod
– Slightly heavy if you wish take off the bassinet and let your baby nap in a different room.
– Make sure you clean the mattress and sheets regularly to avoid any risk of mould appearing. Not sure if this is really a disadvantage or just common sense with any bedding product!
Other Bassinets Suitable For Small Spaces
Other than the Snuzpod, I obviously don’t have first hand experience of any other bassinets. But these were others on our list when we were researching the best option for Mia.
Some of these were used by our friends and other parents I know.
Arm’s Reach Concepts Clear-Vue Co Sleeper
Costzon Baby Bassinet, 2 in 1 Lightweight Rocking Crib
Delta Children Sweet Beginnings Bassinet
If you want the comfort and convenience of co-sleeping while also ensuring safety for your newborn, then a bedside sleeper is the way to go.
And the Snuzpod 3-in-1 is a great solution for those wanting more than one use from this type of product. The material is quality and hand-made, you can rest assured that it is made of only the best materials and free from harsh chemicals.
If you decide on another option, either from my list above or your own one, please leave a comment below and let me know what you think of it.
You take so many precautions to keep your baby safe, and I feel choosing the right bassinet, even if it means spending a bit more, is certainly a wise investment for your peace of mind.
